But sadly, the opposition fighting Assad is even more brutal than he is. That’s how the MidEast works – sometimes the bulwark against jihadists is the slightly less abominable choice. And to his credit and despite his despotism, Assad managed to oversee one of the most peacefully pluralistic societies in the Mideast. He’s a member of a religious minority in his own country. And if I have to choose between two sides of hard-to-like sides in the MidEast, I’m going with the Shia Crescent over the Sunni/Gulf/Israel nexus. The Free Syrian Army? Hell no.

And if you and cispos are serious about peace, you should be supporting Trump’s pull out and Putin’s deal with Erdogan. Because the only alternative was prolonged war.
